Calexico by Gordy de Necochea Jr

If you're feelin kind of lonesome
And feel like moving along
To the east of San Diego
Take the road least traveled on
The road is kind of dusty through the desert
For a while
You'll see some dark eyed people
But you will never see them smile
There's nothing wrong
You just don't belong in Calexico
Almita she's a lady, she's a lover, she's a tramp
Almita she's a baby, she's a beauty, she's a vamp
And she has ways, heavenly ways
You will pass her garden where the gate is old
And worn
You will find no flowers
Only crucifixion thorns
There's nothing wrong, you just don't belong
Down in Calexico

I wrote this song while in Cairo. I was amazed at the sea of people, the myriad mazes, marvels - old and new. I was always greatly impressed by the perfume vendors and their ability to concoct any scent known to man. Smell is such a powerful sense. It has the ability to instantly conjur up a strong memory, or transport you to another time and place. To this day, the smell of yerba buena always reminds me of the time when I was seven years old, and my brother Michael and I would run through our neighbor, Mrs. Salie's, garden just to smell the tea leaves growing in the shade.
